Northmen Win Turkeyshoot Field Lacrosse Tournament

A group of grade four students recently travelled to Ithaca, New York to take part in the Turkeyshoot field lacrosse tournament and came back to Canada as the decisive champions. In what is billed as the largest lacrosse tournament in the world, the Turkeyshoot is a 7 on 7 field format similar to field lacrosse. Not knowing what sort of competition to expect, the boys worked hard in practices leading up to the tournament, including a couple of exhibition games against Brampton. Although they were able to handle their Canadian rivals fairly easily they did not take their American competition lightly.

The first game on Saturday was against the Canandaigua Braves, and the skill of the Northmen quickly showed who was the better team as they took a commanding lead early and cruised to a 19-2 win. Any loss from here on in would knock a team out of the hunt for a fourth game and chance to win the gold. The second game was against Penn Yan and once again the Northmen triumphed with a final score of 13-3. The semi-final opponent was the hometown Ithaca boys, who had also won their first two games and wanted to win their own tournament. However the Northmen had different ideas and gave Ithaca a lesson in their own game. The ability of our boys to move the ball around to open teammates and let the ball do the work led to numerous uncontested shoots. The Northmen moved into the final with a 16-5 win.

Brampton was the only other Canadian team in the grade 3/4 division was also able to make it to the finals with a close overtime win over Penn Yan. The Northmen started the game slowly, seeming over confident and lackluster and fell behind early. After taking a timeout to get the boys back on tract, they picked up the intensity at both ends of the field and carried it on to a 14-4 win and bragging rights as champions.

All the Northmen opponents commented on the skill and ability of the entire team and used them as examples to show their own teams how the game should be played.

From the goalie stopping and advancing the ball, to loose ball hustle and pick up, to defensive checking – especially the long poles, to the patience they showed in spreading out and controlling the ball, and especially their passing and catching ability, the boys dominated in all aspects of the games.

The boys and their parents had a great time in Ithaca. The team members are – Jesse Boddam, Dallas Bridle, Nathan Janes, Ryan Johnston (an Elora boy who fit in extremely well), Ryan Myles, Nick MacDonald, Trevor Smyth, Riley Thompson, Jason Charbonneau, Jeff Taylor, Joel Coyle and goalie Nick Fournier. The Coaching staff is Luke Coyle, John Kartalev, Dale Smyth and Greg Thompson.

Northman Win! Novice 2 Bronze

The novice 2 Northmen field lacrosse team recently won the bronze medal at the Provincial Championships in Hamilton!
